PRESS RELEASE
Reykjavík, 17 September 2026
Icelandic technology company Laki Power today announced a €6 million Series A round led by the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), with participation from existing shareholder ReykVC. Transition Finance Network (TFN) supported the transaction as fundraise advisor. The round marks the NATO Innovation Fund's first investment in Iceland.
Laki Power's self-powered monitoring systems for high-voltage transmission lines use one integrated device mounted on the conductor, combining cameras, weather and line sensors, onboard compute and satellite communications. The device draws its energy directly from the powerline, independently from other energy sources.
Laki Power's patented power-harvesting technology provides up to 300W of power directly from high-voltage lines — up to 100 times more onboard power than conventional inductive solutions. This enables operators to detect ice buildup and wildfire risk, monitor the physical condition and security of the line, and measure how much electricity it can safely carry under prevailing conditions.
The technology enhances the resilience of power grids in extreme weather conditions, such as cold and wildfires, and enables the monitoring of transmission lines and their direct surroundings, even in uninhabited areas.
Technology powers grid security and resilience
Electricity grids have become both the backbone of modern society and a primary target of physical interference and sabotage. Yet most of the grid remains unobserved between substations, and existing solutions depend on solar or battery power that cannot sustain continuous operation, or harvest limited energy from the line.
Laki Power's patented technology closes this gap: the LKX-MULTI monitoring station sits directly on a conductor with no need for external power sources. Drawing up to 300W directly from the line, it enables grid operators to run intelligent systems anywhere on the line, rather than relying on more substantial installations.
In addition, it enables new use cases, starting with the LKX-DRONE, which allows drones to recharge along power-line corridors — extending their reach for reconnaissance missions related to security, wildfire and grid operations.
Financing to unlock manufacturing and deployment at scale
The investment follows commercial traction with transmission system operators and utilities across Europe, North America and Australia, including deployments with Landsnet in Iceland, Statnett in Norway and Hydro-Québec in Canada.
The investment will enable Laki Power to scale manufacturing, expand deployments of the company's flagship product, the LKX-MULTI, with grid operators in Europe, North America and Australia, and accelerate development and distribution of its next-generation platforms, such as the LKX-DRONE.
"When we founded Laki Power, our goal was to give grid operators eyes on infrastructure which they have previously operated blind. Recent years have shown that a resilient grid is not just an operational asset but a security imperative. With the NATO Innovation Fund behind us, we can bring real-time visibility — and soon drone infrastructure — to power grids around the world."
— Ósvaldur Knudsen, CEO and co-founder, Laki Power
"Energy grids are becoming one of the Alliance's most exposed pieces of critical infrastructure — targeted deliberately in Ukraine and increasingly strained everywhere else by demand growth and ageing networks. Laki Power's technology does something unique: it turns the grid itself into a network of powered stations, each one able to monitor its surroundings, charge drones and carry satellite communications. That combination of capabilities is exactly why the NIF is backing the company."
— Dr. Sander Verbrugge, Partner, NATO Innovation Fund
"We backed Laki Power because we saw the potential to bring an intelligence layer to critical power infrastructure. The combination of continuous power, sensing, communications and compute directly on transmission lines creates capabilities that simply weren't practical before. The commercial validation Laki has achieved and now NIF's investment reinforce our conviction in the company, and we are pleased to continue backing the team through its next stage of international growth."
— Kristinn Pálmason, CEO of ReykVC, which first invested in Laki Power in 2023
